Last night I went to the preview of the musical ‘Treasure Island’ at Four Seasons Theatre in Langford, BC. It was great fun, and the two 11 year old guys I took with me seemed to really enjoy the singing and fighting pirates.
Why am I telling you this? Because it so happens that I took some promotional photos for them, one of which landed on the cover of the show’s program.
A little over a month ago I met with some cast members and a few from the production team at the Maritime Museum in downtown Victoria. When told we’d be shooting at the museum, I wasn’t sure what to think. I had never been there, and I imagined having trouble setting up my lights because of space restrictions. Although there was not a lot of room to work in, it made for a great setting. There is a crow’s nest (which people can climb up to) with a Jolly Roger flag hanging over it, a cannon right below the nest, and to the side there were barrels and sacks and ropes, just like you’d imagine on a dock in the olden days.
Again on the subject of space restrictions; in one case I almost had to squeeze in behind a display case to get the shot I needed. Also, I had to wrap my leg around a staircase handle to stay “safe” while getting another shot. In hindsight, not a smart thing to do, but I got what I needed.
Here are some photos from the shoot, with warts and all:
And just to make sure you know it, Treasure Island opens tonight and goes on until March 27th.
